Alagna Valsesia: the first Covid-free town in the Italian Alps

Thanks to the mass vaccination on Friday 21 May, the first Covid-free city in the Italian Alps is becoming a reality

One Thursday in May on the second floor of the Town Hall of Alagna Valsesia, a renowned tourist resort at the foot of Monte Rosa, the phones keep ringing: “is it confirmed tomorrow? What time should I come? What vaccine do they give us? ”, The residents and workers of the tourism sector constantly ask, who have been waiting for their turn to be vaccinated for months.
I ring the intercom and the mayor of the small mountain town comes to meet me, we are almost the same age and he says to me:"Come in, I'm Roberto." In an ancient Walser building in wood and stone, above the small elementary school of the village, you can breathe the frenzy that precedes important occasions. “In the end, for tomorrow, we managed to recover 202 vaccines” he says satisfied. A few hours earlier, however, when we spoke on the phone, he had reached 120 and, considering the times and the few inhabitants, it had already seemed like a victory.
In the office next door sits Pier, the secretary who keeps the records of all vaccinations and he, who was born here and knows a little everyone, manages the bookings of the vaccinated candidates.
Not far away an elderly man, born in 1933, is walking along the main street of the town: “I had the vaccine, two doses, I'm fine. But anyway I lived through the war, I was about 10 years old and I remember the great hunger we had, a great hunger. But never had the town been so empty, people always went out. Ah, and in 88 years I had never worn the mask. " His eyes are lost in memories as he talks about youth. Then, resolute, he takes his leave and starts again, slowly, along the slope of the town center.

Mass vaccination
Early in the morning, doctors from the USCA (Special Continuity Care Units) reach the gym where the "Alta Valsesia" vaccination hub has been set up. Volunteers from Anpas and Alpine Rescue distribute the forms for the medical history and consent and all wait patiently for their turn. The sport climbing panels decorate the walls of the gym and frame the outdoor chairs, in white plastic, which divide the nearly vaccinated from the newly vaccinated who have to wait at least twenty minutes before being able to leave.
Nurse Claudia - 25 years of professional experience behind her - divides the vials of Moderna: each one will be enough for approximately 11 doses of the vaccine. “Left or right arm? What is the hand with which he writes? Then let's do it on the other. "
The pandemic does not leave too much room for delay and even those who are skeptical, in order to work, feel forced to get vaccinated in order not to lag behind their competitors.
Hoteliers, restaurateurs, waiters and bartenders, mountain guides, cableway operators, taxi drivers, tour leaders, merchants, agricultural entrepreneurs and simple residents: the town aspires to become the first Covid-free destination in the Alps runs to get vaccinated and does so with a fair amount of enthusiasm, despite the winter of closures and despite everything.

Un giovedì di maggio al secondo piano del Municipio di Alagna Valsesia, rinomata località turistica ai piedi del Monte Rosa, i telefoni continuano a squillare: “é confermato domani? A che ora devo venire? Che vaccino ci fanno?”, chiedono di continuo i residenti e i lavoratori del comparto turistico che, da mesi, attendono il loro turno per essere vaccinati. 


Suono il citofono e mi viene incontro il sindaco del piccolo comune montano, abbiamo quasi la stessa età e ci viene spontaneo darci subito del “tu”: “vieni pure, io sono Roberto.” 
In un antico edificio Walser in legno e pietra, sopra la piccola scuola elementare del paese, si respira la frenesia che precede le occasioni importanti. 
“Alla fine, per domani, siamo riusciti a recuperare 202 vaccini”, mi dice soddisfatto. 
Qualche ora prima invece, quando ci eravamo sentiti al telefono, era arrivato a 120 e, considerati i tempi e i pochi abitanti, gli era già sembrata una vittoria.


Nell’ufficio accanto siede Pier, il segretario che tiene i registri di tutte le vaccinazioni e lui, che qui ci è nato e conosce un po’ tutti, gestisce le prenotazioni degli aspiranti vaccinati. 


Poco distante un anziano signore, classe 1933, passeggia sul corso principale della città: “ho fatto il vaccino, due dosi, io sono a posto. Ma comunque ho vissuto la guerra, avevo circa 10 anni e mi ricordo la gran fame che avevamo, una gran fame. Ma mai la città era stata così vuota, la gente usciva sempre. Ah, e in 88 anni la mascherina non l’avevo mai messa.” 
I suoi occhi si perdono nei ricordi, mentre parla della gioventù. Poi, risoluto, si congeda e riparte, lentamente, lungo la salita del centro cittadino.



La vaccinazione di massa

Di buon mattino i medici delle USCA (Unità speciali di continuità assistenziale) raggiungono la palestra dove è stato allestito l’hub vaccinale dell’Alta Valsesia. 
I volontari dell’Anpas e del Soccorso Alpino distribuiscono i moduli per l’anamnesi e il consenso e tutti attendono pazientemente il proprio turno. I pannelli da arrampicata sportiva decorando le pareti della palestra e incorniciano le sedie da esterni, in plastica bianca, che dividono i quasi vaccinati dai neo-vaccinati che devono attendere almeno venti minuti prima di potersi allontanare. 


L’infermiera Claudia - 25 anni di esperienza professionale alle spalle - divide i flaconi di Moderna: ognuno basterà all’incirca per 11 dosi di vaccino. 
“Braccio sinistro o destro? Qual è la mano con cui scrive? Allora facciamola sull’altro.” 


La pandemia non lascia troppo spazio agli indugi e anche chi è scettico, pur di lavorare, si sente costretto a vaccinarsi per non rimanere indietro rispetto ai concorrenti.


Albergatori, ristoratori, camerieri e baristi, guide alpine, operatori degli impianti a fune, tassisti, accompagnatori turistici, esercenti, imprenditori agricoli e semplici residenti: la che città ambisce a diventare la prima destinazione Covid free delle Alpi corre a vaccinarsi e lo fa con un discreto entusiasmo, nonostante l’inverno di chiusure e nonostante tutto.
