The 2012 Northern Italy earthquakes: San felice sul Panaro, three years later

May 20th 2012 at 04:03:52 a terrible earthquake of magnitude 5.8, duration of 20 seconds and with epicenter in Finale Emilia to 6.3 km of depth, surprises the population in the sleep.
May 29th 2012 at 09:00:03 another awful shake upset the inhabitants making them again fall in the fear and in the panic.
The balance of earthquake is dramatic: 27 dead and at least 350 wounded.
The historic preservation protected in the stricken area are 1159 and around 600 of they have been damaged and the earthquake hit 7000 commercial farms and around 2000 have been damaged or destroyed and they must be reconstruct.
During the earthquake almost 17.000 people have been assisted and 100 equipped areas have been prepared for the assistance to the population. In the phase of first emergency the number of men and women of Civil Protection who served in these places reached a maximum of 5253 people. 2.5 billion euro allocated in three years and damages are estimated around 13,2 billion of euro. Over 9000 evacuees were able to return home. Other 8000 still live in the camps, at the end of the summer.
After three years, many city centers have been made accessible again, some houses demolished and others rebuilt. In San Felice sul Panaro, one of the countries most affected by the earthquake, the city center has been rebuilt in a rural area not far away, as the public buildings and many houses of the old town are still uninhabitable. Some residents have restored their houses and returned to live in them, after a period spent in campers, tents, caravans; but those economically in greatest difficulty, not having huge savings, still live in the containers made available after the dismantling of the camps managed by civil protection and voluntary associations. Other citizens, however, are still hostage to the inability of their home, located too close to an unusable building that does not allow them to intervene on the restoration of their home and still live in private homes, partially at the expense of the state. Meanwhile, the days pass and, three years after the earthquake, many still dream that the life will return as before the earthquake of 2012.
